The Glassdoor Employees Choice Awards have recently named the top 50 companies to work for in the UK, as voted for by their employees. As 2019 draws to a close, many of these companies are also going to be some of the best to work for in 2020. Given that the New Year is the popular time to start looking for a new job or that next career move for many of us, here are the top ten winners of the awards, with a brief overview of what made them stand out for their staff.

1: Google

Not a newcomer to this list, the tech giant has been consistently listed as one of the best places to work in the last six years. They were also number one back in 2015, so they’re clearly doing something right.Work-life balance and company culture topped the list for staff, as well as the fact the company offers a lot of benefits, and decent opportunities for training and advancement.

 

2: Equal Experts

Equal Experts

This software consultancy was founded with forward-thinking principles in mind, and it’s certainly paid off. The company operates around the principles of an associate based model, which means there are a number of regular freelancers and contractors in the workforce.Being able to constantly learn and develop as part of the company culture, as well as a good work-life balance, were also key positive factors for employees here.

 

3: Salesforce

Another company that’s made this list before, Salesforce has crept up the leaderboard to reach the third spot this year. One of the things that makes this place stand out for employees is the volunteering (staff get seven paid days off a year to do some volunteering), as well as plenty of training and advancement opportunities.While work-life balance was also at the top of the list, some employees said it can be hard to find a happy medium sometimes, due to the sheer amount of things on offer.

 

4: Hiscox

Business insurance provider Hiscox comes in at number four, with company culture and career opportunities being some of the main benefits of working there.The fact the company also encourages ambition, discussion, and assertiveness was also listed as one of the main reasons employees enjoy working there so much.

 

5: Softcat

Softcat

Softcat already has quite a few awards under its belt. The IT solutions company is highly regarded by its employees thanks to the fact it provides a supportive culture and environment.Many staff also praised the good levels of employee engagement, and plentiful rewards on offer for hard workers.

 

6: Abcam

Abcam

This scientific research tool provider offers a plethora of benefits for employees, including share schemes, social events, and even shopping discounts. Even so, work-life balance and a good working environment topped the list for most employees here.An agile workspace, as well as investment in staff were also mentioned with the general consensus among employees being that the company genuinely cared for them.

 

7: Microsoft

A company that needs no introduction, Microsoft employees cited the new ethical approach of the company, positive culture, and a supportive and welcoming workforce as some of the main benefits of working there.Once again, work-life balance and flexible working were among the top reasons staff rated the company so highly, especially impressive given the size of the organisation.

 

8: SAP

SAP

Another tech company to top the list, SAP employees went on record to say that the company culture and work-life balance were the best things about working there. The majority of employees felt that the company was understanding about their needs, as well as being flexible when possible.Support from managers, and an open and honest culture that encourages sharing and collaboration, is also a major benefit according to staff.

 

9: Topps Tiles

Topps Tiles

One of the few companies to make this list that isn’t in the tech sector, Topps Tiles has won plenty of employee praise for their managerial style. Many staff mentioned the ‘family feel’ of the company, and that it was a very supportive place to work in general.Bonus and commission schemes were also high on the benefits list, as was the general support field teams received from head office and top-level management.

 

10: Arup

Arup

Employee ownership in the company, along with a good work-life balance were some of the key factors employees voted for Arup. The large multinational professional services firm was also rated highly for the fact it enables staff to work on satisfying and interesting projects.The company culture, which fosters a collaborative and supportive working environment was also a big bonus for employees, as was the fact that there are opportunities for staff to learn and develop.
