Skills England is a newly launched government body, set up to manage post-16 education in England. Its main goal is to close the gap between the skills that employers need, and the education offered by schools and training providers. Key sectors where skill shortages are the most severe, such as construction, healthcare, and engineering, will be prioritised. By working with central and local government, businesses, training providers, and trade unions, Skills England aims to create a skills system that meets the future demands of the country.

By collaborating closely with employers, Skills England will ensure that apprenticeships provide practical, hands-on experience that matches the skills needed in the job market. This will make apprenticeships a more attractive and effective pathway for students entering the workforce.

Skills England will also work with universities to make sure that higher education courses meet employer needs. This collaboration will inform the design of university courses that equip students with relevant skills and knowledge. What Challenges Does Skills England Face?


While Skills England offers many potential benefits to students, employees, and businesses, it also faces several challenges:

  • Funding: Securing adequate funding to support its programmes is a major challenge.
  • Coordination: Working with a diverse group of stakeholders, such as trade unions, businesses, and educational establishments, can be complicated and time-consuming.
  • Relevance: Keeping training programmes up-to-date with job market needs is an ongoing challenge.
  • Result measurement: Measuring the impact of Skills England’s initiatives and making necessary adjustments will be crucial to its long-term success.
  • Legislation: At the time of its launch, the Skills England body wasn’t legally backed by the Skills England Bill. At the time of writing this blog post, the bill is still under discussion and hasn’t been passed into law yet.
  • Setting up: Skills England was launched in July 2024 and is likely to take between nine and 12 months to fully set up. During this time, it’s important that existing training programmes aren’t disrupted.
  • Including all: Skills England must reach out to all sizes of businesses, not just large companies, or industries with skill shortages. Equally, all sizes of training providers, from small independents to top universities must have a voice in the conversation.
  • Time: It will take time to bring together all stakeholders, and design or update courses.

While these challenges aren’t impossible to overcome, they do present a hefty obstacle to the success of Skills England.

 

What About Wales, Scotland, And Northern Ireland?


Skills England applies to England only. However, all four countries are included in the UK Employer Skills Survey. The last survey was carried out in 2022, with results for each country. The 2024 survey is happening right now.

While Skills England aims to create a workforce that is a better skill-fit for what employers need, without relying on overseas workers, it’s still unclear how successful this will be. If all the challenges listed above can be overcome, Skills England will provide better training and employment opportunities for students and workers alike. However, until the accompanying Skills England Bill is passed into law, businesses and the general public will have to wait and see.
