Why Remote Working Really Works

Employment, News / 19 February 2019

Attitudes to work are changing. Even in the recent past, the idea of being able to choose your hours, let alone do your job while sipping a megamachiato in a shabby chic coffee shop, would have seemed as fantastical as living on Mars.Today however, that scenario is a reality for many of us, and the numbers are growing. The Office of National Statistics has published research that claims around 50% of the UK workforce will be working from home by next year. There’s more demand than ever for work from home roles as a result, so much so that Google plans to roll out changes to help jobseekers find them a bit more easily when they search for a new job.

So what’s all the fuss about? Apart from the obvious advantages of being able to edit spreadsheets in your slippers, there are some of the very real benefits for both employers and employees.

Remote Working Really Works

  Productivity

Any employers reading this might already be panicking at the thought of letting employees work flexibly and off site. Surely it’s a disaster waiting to happen: Your entire workforce vanishes from the office, only to sit at home watching Judge Rinder instead of hitting your sales targets.

While there certainly are some problem areas when it comes to remote working, they aren’t necessarily what you might think, and productivity certainly isn’t one of them. A number of studies show the exact opposite in fact. Employees that work remotely showed an increase in productivity.

  Happiness and Morale

Another area that is hugely impacted by remote working is employee happiness. Those with flexible working hours and locations are much happier with their work/life balance, and also have higher morale.

For employers, this translates into more company loyalty as well. This, in turn, also means higher levels of staff retention, because happy employees are much less likely to want to find somewhere else to work.

  Less Environmental Impact

Considering we live in a precarious time when it comes to climate change, remote working gives both employers and employees the potential to greatly reduce their everyday carbon footprint. Less employees on site means less power requirements, less heating requirements, and even less space usage in the long term.

For employees, this means less (or even no) time spent commuting, which reduces the environmental impact of travel.

  Global Talent

Remote working opens up a huge amount of opportunity for companies and recruiters. Rather than having to find talent in the local or national area, employers can now choose from a global pool of applicants.

For employees, working from home means that you can essentially live anywhere you like, even abroad. This opens up a range of lifestyle possibilities that are simply not feasible with traditional employment, and is a major contributor to the ‘happiness’ factor mentioned earlier. Yes, you really could be working from the beach. As long as there’s Wi-Fi.

  Reduced Costs

Both employers and employees benefit from reduced costs by implementing remote working. For companies, office costs will be reduced, as well as any related costs like travel allowances due to the fact less employees need to be onsite. This also makes remote working a particularly attractive option for smaller and newer companies, as there’s no real need to massively invest in office space and equipment, even with medium sized teams.

For employees, there’s the obvious savings to be made in terms of travel costs, and outgoings could be further reduced in areas like childcare and animalcare. Being able to work from home also means that employees can choose to live outside major employment areas like cities, while taking advantage of more competitive housing prices.

All in all then, remote working looks like a sensible way forward for everyone. While there are certain to be some jobs that always need to be done on site, with the increasing move to robotics and automation in the workplace, it might not be that long until even more of us are sipping ultrachocofrappes in a cool cafe tapping away at our laptops.
