Remote Job Revolution – Google to Make Off Site Roles More Searchable

Employers, Jobposting / 10 February 2019

Remote working is becoming much more common, and with good reason. There’s plenty of evidence that it delivers greater employee efficiency, reduces stress, and even decreases operating costs for companies.

Setting up for remote working takes some preparation for employers of course, but given the ease of using cloud technology and networks these days, the advantages are continually proving to be well worth the initial investment (read more here about the advantages of remote working).

Given the boons to both jobseekers and employers, the demand for remote work is increasing rapidly. Now even Google has taken note.

Search Preference

Google has stated that it will soon enable job posting sites to highlight any remote roles that are listed in Google Search. The idea is to make it much easier for jobseekers to locate these remote roles and work from home jobs

There are a few minor caveats of course – only fully remote roles will gain any search advantage; Jobs that offer partial work from home won’t qualify. Furthermore, these remote roles need to be listed as full time positions.

Location data is also important, and Google recommends that at least one country is specified in the job posting, although more can be added for a wider reach.

Job Posting and Employment Impacts

The increased online search visibility for work from home jobs is likely to have a major knock on effect for job posts and job boards in general. Online job boards and social media have already drastically changed how jobseekers look for jobs, and this reliance on the digital space for jobs is only going to increase. In turn, this means that while the Google Search changes are a welcome addition for both job posters and jobseekers, it’s going to lead to increased competition for job posters in all probability.

Making job adverts that stand out is going to be more important than ever in the coming years. If you’re a recruiter or employer, then making sure you know how to optimise a job post to reach the best candidates quickly is going to be a key factor in attracting the best remote employees. It’s also going to mean that having a strong presence on job boards and a streamlined remote recruitment process for international applicants is going to be essential.

Digital Futures

Once this new feature is fully rolled out by Google, it should make finding ideal candidates a lot easier for recruiters and employers. Hiring from a global talent pool has always been advantageous, and this enhanced search functionality should make it even more so, as well as simplfiying the process somewhat.

Given that some predictions suggest remote working could equal, or even surpass, fixed location working by 2025, then these changes are coming at just the right time.

One thing is certain – easier access to, and higher visibility of, remote jobs is going to be beneficial for both jobseekers and employers when Google finally makes these search modifications live.
