Dietitian Career Guide

Sectors / 03 July 2024

Dietitians work in the field of dietetics, a healthcare-related discipline centred around food, nutrition, and diet, to optimise health, manage medical conditions, aid recovery from injury or illness, and more.

Dietitians must be qualified and registered to practice in their chosen geographical location. Once qualified, dietitians can work in various specialities, including medical and clinical, sports, and community settings.

Dietitians often use their knowledge and skills to work in other fields, like research science, product development, and education.

In this Career Guide, we’ll take a closer look at two roles in dietetics: registered dietitian and food technologist.

6 Useful Tips For First Time And Early Career Job Seekers

Potential Roles in Dietetics

Most dietitians work directly with patients, at least at the start of their careers. With experience, some may divert onto other adjacent career paths. Moving to a more commercial area of dietetics, food, and nutrition can offer attractive career progression and lucrative salary opportunities.

Registered dietitians assess, advise, and support patients in optimising their health using diet and nutritional intake. They may work with adults and children with gut conditions or disorders, like Crohn’s disease or coeliac disease, eating disorders, unhealthy weight loss, general ill health, or those recovering from a serious illness. A dietitian’s job involves soft skills, like communication and emotional support, and advanced technical knowledge of physiology, nutrition, biology and chemistry.

Food technologists (also called food scientists) work in teams that develop new food and beverage products. Jobs in this area tend to be for large multinational companies that invest significant amounts of money in bringing new products to market. A food technologist’s job involves ensuring new products are safe for consumption, commercially viable, and meet legal requirements. In addition to the commercial sector, food technologists can also work in research, education, and retail.

Salary and Career Progression

There are many interesting and varied opportunities in dietetics. Some offer high job satisfaction and the feeling of making a difference, while others offer high salaries and are more results-driven, especially in the commercial sector, where speciality foods generate a lot of business.

Registered dietitians in the UK often start their careers in the NHS, working alongside medical and healthcare teams to care for patients with nutritional needs. There is good scope for career progression by following this path, with dietitians following the Agenda for Change national pay scale. However, dietitians working in the private sector can typically earn higher salaries than those in public sector roles.

Salaries start at around £25,000 for newly qualified UK dietitians, increasing to £45,000 and above with experience. The most senior dietitians in the NHS can earn around £75,000 per year. Private sector salaries can vary significantly depending upon the employer, but higher wages are to be expected.

In the US, the average salary for registered dietitians is $60,000, although, as in the UK, salaries can vary significantly depending on sector and employer.

Food technologists in the UK can expect to start their careers on around £25,000 per year, with salaries rising to £50,000 or more for senior roles. Some employers may offer additional benefits, including pensions, private healthcare and bonuses. Reported average salaries for food technologists in the US are between $60,000 and $85,000.

Career progression in this field relies on experience and promotions to managerial roles, although the size and location of a company can also influence the opportunities available.
