Kent is one of the Home Counties, located in the South East of England. Its proximity to London makes it a popular spot for commuters, as well as those looking for a coastal or countryside escape in the summer. It lies between Surrey, West Sussex and Essex, and in addition to being a popular commuter base, has a very diverse local economy. 

Often referred to as the 'Garden of England', agriculture is a well-known part of the local economy, but by no means the largest. Fruits and nuts are grown here, as well as hops. That said, heavy industry, particularly cement manufacturing, and papermaking are prevalent in Kent, and the area has a strong engineering focus thanks to the shipbuilding industry in the Medway, and Rochester's focus on aircraft design and manufacture. 

In terms of local culture, Kent has a large selection of historical buildings (Canterbury Cathedral being one example). The county also has a strong association with literature, given that the father of Charles Dickens worked in Kent, and William Caxton, the man thought to be responsible for bringing the printing press to England, was also from Kent. 

The average salary in Kent is around £26k per year, with manufacturing and retail having the highest percentage of full-time employees. House prices can vary, but are generally much cheaper than nearby London. Despite this, Kent is well connected to nearby counties, and the capital, thanks to an extensive train and road network.
